On Thursday, June 6, the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills hosted a remarkable evening at The Carolina Hotel, Cardinal Ballroom, for their signature event, “Inside the U.S. Open.” Sponsored by Lin Huttaff’s Pinehurst Realty Group, the night brought together nearly 200 guests for an unforgettable behind-the-scenes look at the lead-up to the prestigious U.S. Open Championship.
The evening began with a lively silent auction, where guests had the chance to bid on exclusive items, before transitioning to an award presentation and the highlight of the night – an insightful conversation with Golf Channel Insiders Jaime Diaz and John Wood. The dynamic discussion was led by Jim Hyler, former president of the United States Golf Association (USGA), who guided the conversation with golf’s top insiders, providing unique perspectives on the U.S. Open and its significance to the world of golf.
While the golf conversation captivated the audience, it was our guest speaker, Ahsha Bass, the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills 2022 National Military Youth of the Year, who truly moved the crowd. Bass shared her deeply personal journey, reflecting on how the Boys & Girls Club provided her a second home and inspired her to find her voice. “This is not just an afterschool program. For many members, it is a safe space—a home,” said Bass, who has gone on to become a passionate advocate for youth in military families.
Ahsha’s inspiring words reminded us all of the profound impact that mentorship and community support can have on a young person’s life. Her story exemplifies the mission of the Boys & Girls Club, where children are given the tools to succeed academically, personally, and socially.
The event was made possible thanks to the incredible efforts of many individuals, especially Megan Keating and the Boys & Girls Club staff and board members. Their tireless work behind the scenes ensured that the event was a huge success. Thanks to the generous support of our community, the evening raised an impressive $150,000 for the Boys & Girls Club’s programs that benefit over 1,000 youth and teens across four branches in the Sandhills region.
Our longstanding relationship with the U.S. Open is a point of pride, rooted in the vision of Pinehurst Resort owner Robert Dedman Sr. in 1997. The proceeds from the 1999 U.S. Open helped establish the Boys & Girls Club, and we are grateful for the continued support of Pinehurst Resort, including President Tom Pashley and Bob Dedman Jr., who credited Jim Hyler for his foresight in making this partnership possible.
In addition to the insightful conversations and inspirational speeches, the evening also featured special appearances by local dignitaries, including State Sen. Tom McInnis, Pinehurst Mayor Pat Pizzella, and John Dempsey, former president of Sandhills Community College. Their presence underscored the strong community support for the Boys & Girls Club and its continued growth.
With nearly 75% of our members coming from single-parent and low-income households, the Boys & Girls Club continues to be a beacon of hope, offering a safe and nurturing environment where young people can thrive. We are proud to share that nearly 95% of our members perform at grade level, and 99% anticipate graduating on time—significantly higher than the general population.
As we reflect on the success of “Inside the U.S. Open,” we are reminded of the power of community collaboration and the incredible potential that lies within every young person we serve. With the continued support of our donors, volunteers, and community partners, we look forward to making an even greater impact in the years to come.
